Median hourly earnings $38. Unit group 4521 contains occupation 452111 Fitness Instructor. Only 32% of workers work full-time hours, so the full-time median is not typical of all workers. Median full-time earnings per week, before tax. Source stated on page: 'Median full-time earnings per week and Median hourly earnings: ABS, Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours, May 2025, customised report.' Employment figure: ABS Labour Force Survey, Detailed, February 2026, JSA trend data. JSA states these ANZSCO-based data will not be updated again (replaced by OSCA profiles, which show no earnings figure as loaded). JSA publishes this at ANZSCO 4-digit unit group level, not the 6-digit occupation. No Sydney figure published.
What affects pay
Employment model
Employed trainers earn a wage; many others are contractors or rent space and keep session fees. Official surveys mostly count employees, so self-employed earnings are not in these figures.
Client base
Specialist work (post-rehab, seniors, pre/postnatal, sport performance) and a full book of returning clients lift income more than headline hourly rates suggest.
Location
City gyms and studios charge more per session and usually pay more, but rents and costs are higher too.
